Hi, I'm trying to understand the meaning of user names with an asterisk (*). I'm referring to those on the right hand column of the (main) chat tab.

It just signifies that avatar is close enough to you so all the functions are enabled. Try right clicking on the avatar name there and see that if it doesn't have (*) some menu items are disabled.
In 3D viewer this would mean that avatar is close enough so you could see them and zoom to them.
